»The Last Tree - Bringing Nature into the City«
Abstract
The Tree Hugger Project is an ongoing work of Environmental Art designed to both help us re-discover our relationship with Nature at a very personal and intimate level, and also to increase our understanding and inspire an immediate action, to prevent the Global Warming/Climate Change and their catastrophic consequences. Our figures are created from vines, sticks and branches and other renewable and/or recycled materials, in short from biomass. They can be playful, as in our series titled: “100 ways to hug a tree without looking like a treehugger”, but they more and more often become actors in a political street theatre, overacting if necessary for a more dramatic effect, desperately trying to shake us up in our complacency with deforestation of rainforests and energy generation based on fossil fuels.
Our “Long Line to the Last Tree” produced for the 2008 UN Climate Summit which took place in Poznan, Poland, assumed a life of its own, and in response to ever increasing atmospheric levels of greenhouse gasses started growing with each consecutive stop, from 9 in Poznan, to 11 in Kolobrzeg, to 14 at a stop at the UN Climate Summit in 2009 Copenhagen. In Darmstadt there will already be 17 figures “waiting” in a line to experience a tree, before the last of them is gone, by touching it, feeling it and yes, hugging it.
Biographie
Geboren 1952 in Littauen wuchs er im kommunistischen Polen auf.
Er graduierte mit einem MFA an der Akademie of Fine Art in Krakau.
1976 - Während des Studiums engagiert er sich in der Studentenbewegung und wurde 1980 zu einem führenden Mitglied der Solidarnosc.
1981 - Nach 5 Monaten Gefängsnisaufenthalt verliess er Polen und emmigrierte in die Vereinigten Staaten.
Heute lebt und arbeitet er in Saint Louis, Missouri als amerikanischer Staatsbürger.
Installations 2010 - “Critical Mass- Midnight Ramble” in St. Louis, MO, im Auftrag der Regional Arts Commission St. Louis and SW Garden Neighborhood Association.
2009 - UN Klimagipfel, Kopenhagen, Dänemark, 2 Installationen: “Lonely Tree- Lonely People” auf 14 Figuren erweitert am Rathaus und “Praying for the Victims of Clear Cutting” eine Installation mit Musik- und Geräuschperformance von Maile Colbert und Michal Szostalo am Christianshavn-Platz.

- Kolobrzeg, Poland: “Lonely Tree-Lonely People” durch 2 neue Figuren erweitert symbolisiert die zunehmenden Schwierigkeiten zur Natur zu finden durch die erhöhten Konzentrationen der Treibhausgase in der Atmosphäre – diese Installation wurde um 3 Figuren für die Ausstellung in Kopenhagen im Dezember 2009 und NYC 2010 erweitert.
